Dermoscopy in Primary Care | Medical Education Summit 2018 | Recent Trends in Medical Field

If you evaluate skin neoplasms for skin cancer, then you should want to learn and use dermoscopy in your practice.  I use dermoscopy regularly and find that it allows me to:

1.            Helps differentiate benign from malignant lesions

2.            Miss less melanomas

3.            Biopsy less benign lesions.

This ultimately HAS HELPED ME TO improve MY malignant to benign biopsy ratio for the benefit of MY patients.

I am often asked about which type of dermatoscope should be used.  Dermatoscopes come in all shapes and sizes and many now attach to your smart phone to allow you to see large images on your screen and save them through your phone’s camera.    Selecting the right dermatoscope is a personal choice based on the many options available, the investment you are willing to make and your comfort level with a specific dermatoscope.

When you start to use dermoscopy in your practice, your diagnostic accuracy will increase with time and experience.  You may want to consider taking a course or a workshop at a CME conference.  Because dermoscopy requires you to rely on your best clinical judgment, you should also consider using an app to help you interpret what you see as you get started.  I created an app that contains over 80 photos and charts to help you in your diagnosis.
